1. REGISTERED ERGONOMIST
LEVEL: |

EDUCATION:
The minimum
educational requirements to be certified
as a Registered
Ergonomist
by the ESSACB are as follows:
M+5 qualification (MSc
degree in Ergonomics or
a CLOSELY
related field)) from an academic
institution recognised by ESSA OR
M+3 qualification (BSc degree in
Ergonomics or a CLOSELY related field)
PLUS completion of a course in
Ergonomics recognised by ESSA |

EXPERIENCE:
Evidence of
experience working in Ergonomics must be
submitted. Candidates will be required
to present a Curriculum Vitae consisting
of a minimum of five pieces of written
work (ergonomics projects, research or
reports) to the ESSACB. |
TYPICAL
FUNCTIONS:
The
Registered Ergonomist will be required
to demonstrate competency in selected
areas based on the International
Ergonomics Association (IEA) Core
Competencies as follows:

Investigate and analyse the demands
from ergonomics design to ensure
appropriate interaction between work,
product or environment and human
capabilities and limitations

Analyse
and interpret findings of ergonomics
investigations

ergonomics finding appropriately

the compatibility of human capacity

plan for ergonomics design or

2. ERGONOMICS FACILITATOR
LEVEL: |
|
EDUCATION:
the minimum
educational requirements to be certified
as an Ergonomics Facilitator by the
ESSACB are as follows:
M+ qualification in an allied field
PLUS completion of one or more courses
in Ergonomics recognised or organised by
ESSA |
|
EXPERIENCE:
Two years relevant
experience working in Ergonomics or in a
CLOSELY related general area.
Candidates will be required to present a
Curriculum Vitae of ergonomically
related projects, research and reports
to the ESSACB. |

TYPICAL
FUNCTIONS:
The
Ergonomics Facilitator will be
responsible for the co-ordination of an
Ergonomics Facilitation team within
their own industry. They will be
responsible for the following:

Creating
an awareness of Ergonomics
-
Identifying problems
-
Implementing basic solutions
-
Recognising when to consult a
Registered Ergonomist

CERTIFICATION AND TRANSFERS:
Applications
for certification or upgrading
from the Ergonomics Facilitator (Level
2) to Registered Ergonomist level (Level
1) should be made on the appropriate
form available from the ESSACB or the
Ergonomics Society of South Africa Web
Site, accompanied by:
1.
Certified copies of
qualification(s) where required by the
relevant ESSACB regulations.
2.
The relevant application fee
determined by the Ergonomics Society of
South Africa.
3.
Any additional supporting
information as may be required by the
ESSACB.
The ESSACB
shall in all cases have absolute
discretion in deciding whether any
person shall or shall not be certified. |

ENTRANCE
VERIFICATIONS:
If an
applicant does not meet the education
and experience requirements a written
examination and a personal interview
will be arranged at the discretion of
the ESSACB. |
|
(i)
Written Examination:
Applicants
will be required to sit for a 3-hour
examination approved by the
International Ergonomics Association (IEA).
The intention of this examination
process is to assess the applicant’s
theoretical knowledge and understanding
of practical application of Ergonomics.
Detailed guidelines will be made
available to applicants in the form of
an Examination Handbook produced by ESSA.
(ii)
Personal Interview:
The personal
interview will be conducted by the
ESSACB and is intended to elicit
information on the applicants overall
knowledge, abilities and skills relevant
to Ergonomics. The interview process is
structured to be as objective as
possible. The ESSACB will be evaluating
the applicant against the following
criteria: |

FAILURE TO
ATTEND VERIFICATIONS:
All
candidates will be informed well in
advance of upcoming verification dates,
times and location for the written
examination and personal interview.
Candidates who do not provide acceptable
reasons, in writing, at least 10 days
beforehand for not attending the
verifications will forfeit their
application fee and be required to
reapply. Each applicant will be given
three opportunities to attend the
verification conducted by the ESSACB.
Lack of notification will not be
accepted as a valid reason for
non-attendance. It is the applicant’s
responsibility to ensure that the ESSA
secretary has the correct and up-to-date
contact information. |

RE-APPLICATION PROCESS:
Regardless of the reason for
re-application (upgrading of level,
re-sitting after failing the first
verification or non-attendance) a
waiting period of 3 months is required
before the applicant will be considered
for re-verification. A new application
form must be completed and the
appropriate fees must be enclosed. |
|
CERTIFICATION:
Once
applicants have successfully completed
the verification procedures and have
paid the relevant fees, the ESSACB will
inform them in writing of the
certification level awarded and place
them on the official Ergonomics Society
of South Africa register for the current
year.
Any
certified Ergonomics Facilitator who
feels that their education and/or
experience have been sufficiently
upgraded to warrant a change in
certification level to the status of
Registered Ergonomist is eligible to
apply for review by the ESSACB. The
procedure and application fee structure
will remain the same as for the new
certification application. |

ANNUAL
RE-REGISTRATION:
Annual
re-registration is dependent on receipt
of the annual fee and a written
declaration that the member is still
actively involved in Ergonomics
practice. Certified members are also
required to maintain active
participation over a five year period to
ensure that they maintain
certification. Certified members will
be subject to an ESSACB review to ensure
that standards are maintained in their
Ergonomics-related practices. |

PUBLICATION
OF NAMES OF REGISTERED ERGONOMISTS AND
ERGONOMICS FACILITATORS:
A
comprehensive list of Registered
Ergonomists and Ergonomics Facilitators
will be published annually on the ESSA
Web site, in the ESSA Newsletters and in
appropriate publications, for example,
Safety Management. |

CERTIFIED
MEMBERS REGISTER:
The
Ergonomics Society of South Africa
secretary will keep a register of
certified members, which will contain
the following details: |

Level of certification |

3.
Summary of academic
qualifications |
|
4.
Summary of experience in the
field of Ergonomics |
|
5.
Written examination mark (where
necessary) |
|
6.
Interview impression |
|

Each
certified member shall be entitled to
request, and receive within 30 days, a
copy of information recorded under their
name in the ESSA Certified Members
Register. A fee to cover the costs of
extracting and sending of this
information will be set by the ESSACB
from time to time. |

RIGHT OF
APPEAL:
Any
certified member who is dissatisfied
with the information recorded under
their name in the ESSA Certified Members
Register may appeal to the ESSACB. The
decision of the ESSACB on the appeal
shall be final. |
